Cosley Zoo

Summer is coming to a close...only 14 more days left...

McKenna, Benny & I are working hard to squeeze in everything we want to do.

Today when we woke up the only plans we had was McKenna's blood draw appointment at 9:40am. Aunt Krissy came over to watch Benny.

McKenna & I made our way to Edwards Hospital Plainfield Campus to have her blood draw. After witnessing 4 blood draws when she was a infant, I was super nervous about this one. I wasn't quite sure how they were going to draw the blood out this time (as an infant they drew it out drip by drip from her heel - it was AWFUL). After hearing from my high school friend, Chrissy, whose daughter had to have the same blood draw, I felt much more relaxed. We waited for about 20 minutes before our name was called. Sweet Kenna stole the show in that waiting room...saying Hiii-eee to everyone who walked in. My baby girl is a big girl now and they took her blood just as they would an adult...from her arm. I held her in a bear hug, a nurse held her arm out, straight, and still and another nurse took her blood. Oh the scream. Oh the crying. Oh the tears. After 3 vials of blood and a sesame street bandaid we were out of there. The screaming stopped, the crying stopped...all that was left was tear stained cheekies. We made it out the door and off came the bandaid! She was done with that!

We needed to put some happy into our day, so I made a quick decision to take the kids up to Cosley Zoo in Wheaton. McKenna loves animals and this was the perfect place to cheer her up! Aunt Krissy came with us. Cosley Zoo is another small, local zoo that is absolutely perfect for littles. There weren't many people there and you can get close to the animals. McKenna practically walked the whole thing herself! What a big girl!

15 Months Old

Dear McKenna,

You are 15 months old! You sure are one big girl!

You constantly amaze us with how quickly you learn things and how much you understand. You sure are one smart little girl!

I was planning on stopping these letters when you turned one years old, but I decided I just couldn't do it. There is so much you are accomplishing and I don't want to forget any of it. This has been a perfect way to share and document all that you have been up to...so...I'll continue at 18, 21, and 24 months and then we'll move to yearly! :)

What an awesome 3 months this has been! You are wearing 12 month clothes, size 3 shoes, and size 3 diapers.

Photobucket

You began walking in April when you were 12 months old and you've just taken off since then...you have the bumps and bruises to prove it! You are one very brave little girl, you want to try everything on your own, even if it's not something you're ready to do on your own. You keep us on our toes!

Photobucket

You haven't really started talking yet. You only have a few words, so far. You say...Dad, Yeah, Dog, Trip, Yes, Tuck, Hi (Hiii-eee!), Up, but you usually only talk when you're at home with Daddy, Benny, Trippy & I. You are a pretty quiet girl any where else! Usually you're just a quiet observer watching what is going on around you.

You have picked up on signing and you are able to sign to help communicate your needs or to answer our questions. You can sign...more, yes, no, please, cookie, pancake.

We've had three visits to the doctor's office this past week! UGH! Last week you were diagnosed with an ear infection in your right ear. You were given amoxicillin to take twice a day for 10 days. By day 8 you had developed the worst rash I have ever seen! From your head to your toes you were covered. We headed back to the doctor to find out that you are allergic to amoxicillin. Thank goodness that's all it was! And thank goodness your ear infection was all healed up, so we could stop taking the antibiotic. Benadryl and time were prescribed to help clear up your rash.

On Thursday night we met with Dr. Kreiling for your 15 month well check. You weighed 18 lbs. 5 oz. (less than 3rd percentile), you were 29 3/8 in. tall (25th percentile), and your head circumference was 17 5/8 in. (10-25th percentile). Your weight was a bit alarming. Being at the less than 3rd percentile, you fell off of the chart. As a precaution, Dr. Kreiling wants you to have blood work completed to make sure that everything is okay. She is confident that you are a healthy girl, but just to make sure they will test your blood for celiac disease, proper thyroid function, proper kidney function, and more. She advised us to wait atleast 2 weeks to have your blood work taken that way we can make sure your allergic reaction to the amoxicillin has completed run its course. Oh my silly, sweet girl. It just never ends, does it?! Everything else checked out great. You are doing everything you're supposed to be doing and even more!!! You had two immunizations, MMR and Pentacel, one in each leg. You screamed out right away, but then settled quickly as we snuggled. You're such a big girl.

Photobucket

You have decided that you are too big to sit in your high chair. You want to sit at the table with Daddy & I on your own chair. So, I gave in and we bought you a booster seat. Now you have your own chair and you can sit up to the table like the big girl you are!

Photobucket

You love to help around the house. You like to close the blinds at night, get the mail with Dad, give Trippy treats, feed Trippy, let Trippy out, and dust. Your favorite thing to do is to water the flowers outside, you'll walk out the front door and grab the watering can and tip it onto our pots of flowers. Too bad it's too heavy for you when there is actually water in the can! I think you like watering the flowers the best because then we can look for birdies. Oh my, how you love to watch the birdies outside. When you see one you point and start walking toward it. Too bad they always fly away! They don't realize you're a nice little girl who just wants to say Hiii-eee!

You have tons of things you like to do. Right now you like to play in your sandbox, you like to play with your Dogs, your horsie, and your tea set. You still love going down in the basement to play with Daddy. You push and pull your golf set around the basement, almost like your vacuuming. You love the throw the ball for Trippy to fetch. You like playing keep away from Trippy. You love to draw with sidewalk chalk on the driveway and you can't get enough of bubbles!

Photobucket

You love your little brother so much. You try to comfort him when he is sad by giving him his bottle or by trying to pick him up! You love to give him hugs and kisses and you do all the time. You always make sure to go and get his favorite ball or his turtle for him to play with when he is playing on the floor. You have always been good at sharing, but there are times when you decide that you don't want him playing with them and you pull them away from him. Ahhh big sister!

Photobucket

One toy you will NOT share with anyone is... PUPPY! You love puppy so much. Puppy comes with us everywhere we go and can usually be found either tucked in your arm or sitting on your chair in the living room. We've decided that your chair is the safe spot for your special toys...puppy and baby...and when you get up from your nap that's where we put them.

You are able to label many body parts on yourself and on others and on Trippy! You can label nose, hair, ears, eyes, mouth, teeth, hands, feet, butt, belly.

Photobucket
You love your Tinkerbell sunglasses! (thanks Jackson!)

Your favorite foods are mandarin oranges, Oreo cookies, strawberry jelly, pancakes, yogurt and whip cream. GP likes to squirt whip cream into your mouth and you have definitely learned quickly that he's the only one you can do that with and when we're with him you take him right to the fridge!

It's no secret how much you love Trippy. She's the first one you look for when you get up, and the first one you say hi to. You love your Trippy girl. Not only do you want to play with her, but now you want to take care of her too. You grab her collar from the door and let us know when she wants to go out and you'll let us know if we forget to take her collar off. You like to put her collar around your neck (not clasped) and walk around with it draped around your neck.

Photobucket

Although dogs and birds are probably your favorite, you love all animals and you've loved being able to see bunches of them at the zoos we've been to this summer. You can tell us what dogs, monkeys, and horses say...they sound pretty similar though! :)

I can't even imagine what the next 3 months will bring!

Just know you are the most perfect little girl in the whole world.

I love you sweet girl.

Love, Mommy

GIRL'S NIGHT!

It's not very often that I get out with just the girls. No kids. No husbands. Just girls.

And actually just this past week I got TWO girl's nights!

They were...AWESOME.

Last weekend we celebrated my friend, Katie K. She just completed her master's program so, along with her best friends, Kristin & Kari, we planned a fun day out.

We began our day at the Bolingbrook Promenade with manicures & pedicures, shopping, and lunch. After lunch we headed to Katie's house to open gifts, have a couple of drinks, and talk, talk, talk :) Dinner reservations at Meson Sabika was the conclusion to a great day out. Dinner only lasted...um...4 hours... I don't think any of us wanted it to end!

Thanks girls for such a fun day out. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Right, Mar?!

Sum Sum Sum Summer Time

It's no secret, we've had the best summer ever. We haven't stopped. Playing in the sunshine, going on adventures, getting out of the house, skipping naptime...it's all better when friends are involved.

Once July 4th comes and goes...summer days seem to fly by as we step closer and closer to that looming first day of school. The day none of us want to think about.

So we won't.

We'll just keep on, keepin' on, enjoying the ever wonderful summer days...

Ahhh...Jim Gill... he brings me back to my Extended School Year preschool days (all 12 years of them!) when we'd dance and sing to the Silly Dance Contest, Knuckles Knees, the Sneezing Song, May There Always Be Sunshine...I could go on and on...

My friends Laura & Megan both worked at the preschool with me at one point and are well versed in the songs of Jim Gill...so when we heard he was going to be at the Geneva Public Library, we jumped on it!

We've recently hit up a small, free, local zoo in our area called the Phillips Park Zoo. There aren't many animals...most being Illinois Prairie animals...think wolves, owls, turtles, bald eagles, peacocks...

Our kids are young enough to not care and it is manageable with little ones with the zoo being so close and small. We went with Laura, Ella & Delilah, Megan & Brayden, Steph, Tucker & Avery AND my Momma came too! After the zoo, we hit up the big playground that is part of the Phillips Park...we had lots of fun!
